10 Ways to Get Rid of a Cold Fast

Written by TYE Medical on Oct 29th 2021

Since modern medicine has no cure for the common cold, you could probably use some tips to get rid of a cold fast. After all, no one wants to prolong the misery. But before you rush to the pharmacy for a promised quick fix, you’ll need a quick education in the best supplements and tips for fighting the cold virus. It’s best to bypass the marketing ploys that aren’t science-backed and opt for proven remedies (some of which don’t come in pill form). Here is what to look for.

1. Zinc

If you’re hoping for a couple extra cold-free days, zinc lozenges may be worth a trip to the drugstore. While many have touted the benefits of zinc, research results have remained sketchy. But a 2017 review of past studies concluded that zinc lozenges could reduce the duration of a cold by 33%, which typically translates to a couple of days. Essentially, if you want fewer sick days, you’re better off taking the zinc than skipping it. Choose products with at least 75 mg of zinc.

2. Vitamin C

Surprisingly, a vitamin C supplement probably won’t prevent a cold, but it can help you get rid of a cold fast. It can also reduce the severity of your symptoms. It takes 1,000-2,000 mg daily, which is about one or two average supplement servings. Not everyone absorbs natural vitamin C well. So, if you depend on your produce intake to get the job done but haven’t seen the hoped for effects, you might want to consider trying a supplement instead. And since your body passes excess vitamin C, you don’t have to worry about getting too much.

3. Black Elderberry

It’s important to distinguish between the supplement form and raw elderberries, bark, and seeds because only the supplement is non-toxic. Traditionally, black elderberry has been used as a cold remedy in various parts of the world. Still, a more recent study confirmed that it’s effective for significantly reducing the duration of a cold and the severity of symptoms.

4. Echinacea

Various herbs and oils

Several studies have shown this popular supplement to be an effective way to get rid of a cold fast and even prevent the onset. How is this possible? Research has shown it can increase specific immune cell production and positively affect overall immune function. An earlier 2012 study suggests a dosage of 2400 mg daily for at least four months to get the maximum benefit. The herb is available in tablet form and as teas and extracts.

5. Probiotics

You’ve probably heard much about the benefits of probiotics. This vital supplement (specifically Lactobacillus) not only enhances gut health but also shortens the duration of upper respiratory symptoms like those related to a cold. This means the right probiotic combination has a significant impact on your overall health. 6. Beetroot Juice

If you want to get rid of a cold fast or reduce symptoms, you can also try beet juice. Before wrinkling your nose, consider that beetroot juice is sweet (albeit earthy in flavor). You can cut the earthy taste with a squeeze of lemon to enjoy a tasty cold remedy.

A 2019 study gave participants seven small doses of beet juice throughout the day and indicated noticeable improvement, especially for asthma patients. Beetroot juice contains high levels of dietary nitrate, which increases the production of nitric oxide that helps prevent upper respiratory infections.

7. Honey

A recent study suggests that this old-fashioned cold remedy is more effective than OTC (over-the-counter) medications and other common treatments. As with other supplements, honey helps you get rid of a cold fast, shortening its duration. But it also provides the additional benefits of coating the throat to soothe irritation, and its sweetness stimulates mucus secretion to coat airways and eases coughing.

8. Rest

Nothing helps prevent colds like sleep, and it’s critical to get more rest while you recover. It’s best to forgo unnecessary exercise as your body fights off the cold virus. Instead, take it as an opportunity for increased rest and relaxation. This will help you bounce back more quickly and reduce overall symptoms.

9. Plenty of Liquids

Various iced drinks

Keeping your body well-hydrated should be a top priority if you hope to get rid of a cold fast. But you don’t need to confine yourself to water only. Try some chicken soup, broth, hot tea, and other liquids to keep your body fueled for the fight. Not only does hydration support your immune system, but it also keeps mucus thinned to ease congestion in your nasal passages and chest.

10. Over-the-Counter Medications

Sometimes your body still needs some additional help to fight off a cold virus. If you’re still battling headaches, sore throat, congestion, and other troubling symptoms, it might be time to reach for a pain reliever, decongestant, or other cold medication to alleviate the discomfort and feel better faster.

And as with all supplements and medication, be sure to check with your doctor first to avoid any interactions with other medicines.
